The former councillor left the party ahead of May's local elections
The Ashfield Independents have dropped potential libel action against one of their former councillors after a letter in his name told people to vote Labour ahead of May's local elections. Andrew Harding, who was elected as the Ashfield Independents member for Huthwaite and Brierley in 2019, was the face of a letter in April which announced he was leaving the party.
Jason Zadrozny, the Leader of the Ashfield Independents, said at the time that the party had instructed lawyers Bindmans LLP to pursue libel action against Mr Harding. But when asked what the progress was on this action, the party has now said it is not proceeding. A spokesperson for the Ashfield Independents said they had decided not to take the matter further after discussing it with Mr Harding.Mr Harding has been contacted for comment but did not respond by the time of publication.
The Ashfield Independents spokesperson added: "Labour in Ashfield do have questions to answer however. It was only a few years ago that their former Chairman received a police caution for telling lies on election leaflets. Now they are at it again." The chairman of Ashfield Labour Party in 2014 accepted a caution from Nottinghamshire Police after a leaflet claimed an independent councillor was being investigated by the Electoral Commission, something which was not true. The Labour Party has declined to comment further on the issue concerning Mr Harding.
