The district will present the consolidation plan to the school board next week, on Nov. 3.
In Colorado, the loss of students also means the loss of funding for schools. By losing more than 6,000 elementary and middle school students in the past five years, DPS has also lost $61 million per year, according to a district news release.
Rob Gould, president of the Denver teachers union, said the number of employees affected is likely in the hundreds. There is uncertainty about what happens after the 2023-24 school year because the teachers union is still negotiating with the district about the consolidation plan, said Angelina Ursetta, spokeswoman for the Denver Classroom Teachers Association.
