Most schools in the U.S. are in session for about 180 days a year, compared to roughly 260 working days. Until recently, that 80-day gap had long gone unrecognized by workplaces.

As parents return to the office, they are getting more assertive about asking for flexibility around their children’s schedules

When Ford Willey started elementary school, he had a lot more days off than he’d had in preschool. His father now has more-flexible working hours and unlimited time off.When Robert Willey’s son went from preschool into elementary school two years ago, Mr. Willey suddenly had a new problem at work: His child had a lot more days off from school than Mr. Willey had time off. He had to find a way to cover that gap.

It took some improvisation. During a weeklong break at his son’s school in February, for instance, Mr. Willey took afternoons off “in order to chauffeur him around without actively submitting for vacation days or going through HR protocols.”
