Parents face benefits crackdown under regime to get universal credit claimants working
The changes announced will see the Administrative Earnings Threshold , which is the amount a person must earn for them to stop having to meet regularly with a work coach, increased from the equivalent of 15 to 18 hours of salary.
Sanctions will also be toughened up for single parents or sole carers who previously did not have to look for work. In total, ministers estimate these measures combined could reach around 800,000 parents or carers. The group, which has called for a universal income, added: “With 90 per cent of families on universal credit being forced to go without essentials, it’s clear that our safety net is far too weak.”
“Yet there is little to no evidence that tougher sanctions for those out of work or working part-time is effective.”
