The school has defended its policies, saying it has 'high expectations for all students'
Parents are concerned over the volume of detentions children are receiving at a Nottinghamshire secondary school. Selston High School welcomed pupils back on Monday, September 5, for the start of the academic year, but parents have since spoken out about their concerns over the school's behavioural policies.
"It's making my kids not want to go to school, my son had a panic attack yesterday as he could not remember the rules that he had to follow. If they swore at a teacher then that warrants a detention, or if they have been fighting that warrants a detention, but for someone to turn around and say good art work, or thank you or sorry it's not.
Another parent who did not wish to be named has a child in Year 8, and has also expressed concerns over the number of detentions being issued. "Speaking to other people there was loads and loads of children that had all been issued with detentions for that same day, so many that they could not cope with the numbers of children and had to send them all home. This meant that parents did not know where their children were as they had missed buses, and didn't know if they were still at school or why."
A spokesperson for the school, said: "We have high expectations for all our students. We want them to excel in their examinations and learn habits which will ensure that they are work ready and which will continue to stand them in good stead for the rest of their lives.
