Gun store owners say they're seeing more customers than ever amid the coronavirus outbreak

“I’ve never seen anything like this in my 39 years in this business,” says Mark Tosh, president of Town Gun Shop in Richmond, Virginia, referring to an unprecedented demand for guns and ammo at his stores amid the coronavirus pandemic. Demand is so overwhelming that he is now rationing ammo to fulfill customer orders. For instance, he’s limiting 9 millimeter ammo—one of the most common types of ammunition—to two boxes of 50 rounds per customer.

Today, the demand is rising from the fear and mass hysteria caused by the largely invisible coronavirus and the nation’s precipitous descent into national emergency status. Perhaps driven by the widespread popularity of apocalyptic television shows such asand the government’s failure to adequately prepare for a pandemic it knew was headed our way, Americans, who are now largely sheltering in their homes and apartments, are developing a bunker mentality, hoarding food, supplies and now firearms.

One gun shop in Alabama sold two months’ worth of ammunition in just one week, and the owner says he’s seeing many first-time customers making gun purchases. Customers have told him they’re worried there will be no one to protect them if the local police force, for example, is affected by coronavirus. The owner says he’s also seeing more Asian-Americans come into his store for the first time, who tell him they are worried they’ll be blamed for the spread of the virus.
