The works join a star-studded lineup at a 20th-century art auction next month in New York
Christie’s is bringing two more major works to its 20th-century evening sale in New York next month that are each expected to break auction records for the artists, Richard Diebenkorn and Joan Mitchell.
According to Christie’s, the estimate for Mitchell’s Untitled is among the highest for a female artist. This past May, Sotheby’s sold a 10-foot-tall Spider sculpture by Louise Bourgeois that had been owned by Fundação Itaú, a Brazilian foundation, with an estimate between US$30 million and US$40 million; it achieved US$32.8 million, with fees.
The painting was a response to the artist’s visit to the Soviet Union in 1964, made as part of an exchange program for artists. The trip, in which Diebenkorn saw several works by Henri Matisse, marked a “turning point in the artist’s artistic practice,” Sara Friedlander, Christie’s deputy chairman of post-war and contemporary art said in a news release. Afterward, he shifted from figuration “to a lifelong pursuit into the exploration of abstraction.
