Anna Burnside gives her reflections on the first day of the Covid Inquiry.

As the Scottish Covid-19 Inquiry got underway in Edinburgh yesterday, memories of the pandemic came flooding back.

The first day was spent hearing from the lawyers representing the Scottish Government, the STUC and many other charities and pressure groups who will be giving detailed evidence to the long-awaited probe into Scotland’s response to the pandemic. Alan Inglis had a particularly difficult day. It was the second anniversary of his son Calum’s death from Covid in Addiewell Prison. Yesterday’s contributions were a snapshot of the different groups which were profoundly affected by Covid. Dementia sufferers in care homes, autistic children whose routines were disrupted, nurses struggling to get the proper PPE, people with special needs who could not understand why everyone now wore a mask and could not give them a hug.
