Team does not see need to rush decision, wants to be sure he can't come back sooner than 10 days

The team is merely waiting to get a true diagnosis of the severity of his ankle sprain.
You don’t put Machado — an 11-year veteran and a man who takes great pride in playing almost no matter what befalls his body — on the injured list unless there is no choice. For one thing, there has to be no choice for Machado, who hasn’t been on the IL since 2014. And Machado believes he can be back sooner than later.
Machado played through a shoulder injury the final 5½ months of 2021 that multiple people in the organization said would have landed most people on the IL. Machado took five days off in May without going on the IL. In the end, Machado could be out the several weeks initially feared. There was a walking boot in front of his locker Monday, and the area around his ankle, according to those who saw it, looked pretty grotesque.That’s how ankle sprains look. That Machado surprised the Padres by how well he was “moving around” is perhaps a good indication. But ankle sprains are tricky. Their effects can linger.
