'I haven’t done what I need to do to be in the lineup,' Padres center fielder Trent Grisham says as rookie Jose Azocar starts a fifth straight game
Trent Grisham’s time will come again. Padres manager Bob Melvin insisted as much Wednesday afternoon even as he penciled rookie Jose Azocar’s name into the lineup in center field for a fifth straight game. And even if his Gold Glove center fielder knows that to be true, too, it’s not where Grisham would like to begin a conversation about what’s gone so wrong about his 2022 season.“We’ve won four straight,” the 25-year-old Grisham said as he dressed for batting practice.
Grisham smiled as he spoke. He was reflective. He’s optimistic that the player he was in 2020 — a Gold Glove defender with slug and patience and a knack for the dramatic — is within reach, as difficult as it is to tug at just one of the threads all bundled up in the most confounding year of his career.
You know, the guy smirking and barking into the Dodgers’ dugout after a game-tying home run off Clayton Kershaw in 2020. “All in good time. All these struggles, I think it all happens for a reason. I think it’s strengthening me for something big to come.”
