The Padres' Manny Machado starting in the field for the first time since injuring his ankle
Machado is 1-for-5 with four strikeouts since returning to action on Thursday. The one hit was a first-inning double on Thursday.A finalist to start at third base for the NL at Dodger Stadium in the All-Star Game later this month, Machado is hitting .326/.397/.543 with 12 homers, 46 RBIs and 49 runs scored.
Machado’s 4.3 WAR, according to fangraphs.com, leads all major leaguers so it wasn’t a surprise that the Padres waited until this series to test his ankle. The Padres have lost 13 of their last 14 games against the Dodgers and have lost eight in a row in Los Angeles to fall 3½ games off their pace in the NL West.
The Giants, however, have also lost two in a row and remain four games behind the Padres, who are still pacing the NL wild-card picture with 46 wins, ahead of the Braves and Cardinals . Left fielder Jurickson Profar will lead off, followed by Machado, second baseman Jake Cronenworth and Luke Voit at first base. Jorge Alfaro, working with a balky knee, will serve as the DH, followed by catcher Austin Nola, shortstop Ha-Seong Kim, center fielder Trent Grisham and right fielder Jose Azocar.
