Jose Azocar's second walk Tuesday set up Padres' winning hit; will start in center against lefty on Wednesday
Azocar was predominantly a defensive replacement and speed off the bench early in his stay in the big leagues. These days, he’s becoming a go-to start in center field against left-handed pitching, as is the case Wednesday .
In fact, Azocar pinch-hit for Trent Grisham in the eighth inning Tuesday night against left-hander Kyle Nelson and remained the option in the ninth against right-hander Ian Kennedy, fouling off four pitches en route to the one-out walk that loaded the bases for Alfaro’s game-winning hit. “It means a lot, a lot,” Azocar said of Melvin’s confidence in him. “To come into a game and it’s a righty. I never face a righty and then he gave me that at-bat. I was like, ‘I need to get on base no matter what or tie the game or get a walk or hit my pitch or whatever,’ and I did.”
Azocar in center isn’t the only trend against lefties that’s in play Wednesday. Shortstop Ha-Seong Kim will lead off and Wil Myers is at first base for a second consecutive start since neck tightness sidelined him Monday. Tuesday’s walk-off wins — one at Petco Park and one at Coors Field as the Rockies stormed back to beat the Brewers — strengthened the Padres’ wild-card position. While they remain behind the Phillies, they’ve got a three-game lead on Milwaukee in the race for the NL’s No. 6 seed, essentially a four-game advantage because the Padres hold the head-to-head tiebreaker.
