Blake Snell barely threw more strikes than balls Thursday; Padres checking every box with Fernando Tatis Jr.

Blake Snell was ahead 0-1 against all three Rockies batters in the first inning Thursday. All three made outs.

“When he gets ahead early and is ahead in the count, then we see a different outcome,” manager Bob Melvin said. “But today he had trouble throwing strikes.”As with most pitchers, Snell’s success is often largely determined by fastball command. Snell got just 32 strikes on 60 fastballs. And at least one-third of his fastballs did not get anywhere near the strike zone.

In his previous two starts, in which he allowed two runs in 11 innings, he had a 62 percent strike rate and 79 percent first-pitch strike rate.
