Joe Musgrove will likely have to put his rain expertise to use Sunday, as storms expected most of day
Joe Musgrove is perhaps the best Padres pitcher to be facing the uncertainty that Sunday will likely present.
“The three years I spent here, I got a good feel for the rain,” said Musgrove, who spent 2018-20 with the Pirates. “This field actually holds water pretty well. And they have one of the best grounds crews in baseball. So, I’ve got a feeling they’ll get the game in, that they’ll just manage to make it happen. I think the fact that we both have off days on Monday allows us to kind of push it back later into the day if we have to.
While he is adept at knowing the timing of getting ready physically, when to hold off on warming up and how to prepare mentally, he and everyone else would prefer to know before the day begins what the plan is.“Off days are important over the course of the season,” Padres manager Bob Melvin said. “And sitting here waiting for a game, I wouldn’t consider an off day. So hopefully we get something in.
“I think when we came on this road trip, we thought it was gonna be pretty cold, so maybe it wasn’t expected,” Eric Hosmer said. “But getting some timely hits, getting some big innings. I think we’re doing a good job with the offense and hopefully we can kind of keep that trend going up.”
