Trent Grisham with good start to postseason after substandard regular season

Regardless of how the wild-card series turns out Sunday evening, Trent Grisham finished the season on a high note on a big stage.

Mets manager Buck Showalter respected what Grisham was doing enough that it factored into his decision to call on his closer, Edwin Diaz, to pitch the seventh inning in Game 2 with Grisham leading off.Grisham, still just 25 years old and arbitration-eligible for the first time in ’23, entered this season with a .243/.334/.424 line. While his on-base percentage was just .284, Grisham did hit 17 home runs in 2022, tied for second most on the Padres.

The idea he was possibly going to be the Padres’ everyday left fielder was hardly something anyone would consider. He was being replaced late in games the first week of the season. His defense was mostly excellent, and he hit a respectable .243/.331/.391 with 15 home runs and 36 doubles while mostly serving as the Padres’ lead-off hitter and starting 147 games.
