The Ritchie Valens Post Office, currently the Pacoima Post Office on Van Nuys Boulevard, will be dedicated to the singer-songwriter on May 13 in Pacoima.
Congressman Tony Cardenas introduced two bills renaming post offices on Van Nuys Boulevard after two of the San Fernando Valley’s most famous and celebrated entertainers, Ritchie Valens and Marilyn Monroe. This one, photographed on Friday, March 1, 2019, in Pacoima, will be renamed for Ritchie Valens.
Congressman Tony Cardenas introduced legislation to rename the building for the singer-musician who was 17 years old when he was killed on February 3, 1959 in a plane crash in Iowa that also took the lives of singer-musicians Buddy Holly and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson, and the pilot Roger Peterson.
Members of Valens’ family, Cardenas, Postal Service District Manager Al Santos and local officials are scheduled to attend the dedication ceremony at the federal building site. “Ritchie Valens is an example of how even when it seems like there is no path to your dream, you make your own way and build your own path,” Congressman Tony Cardenas said in an emailed press release. Los Angeles City Councilmember Monica Rodriguez said, also in the press release, “Ritchie Valens exemplifies the talent and greatness that exists in this community.”
