Theme of the week: No. 1 and it’s doneUCLA wrapped up the No. 1 seed in the Pac-12 tournament with its sweep of the Mountain schools and Arizona’s loss to Arizona State — a combination of results that give the Bruins a three-game lead with two remaining. Arizona and USC have clinched opening-round byes in Las Vegas, but their seeds will be sorted out this week.
Theme of the season II: Player of the YearIt’s a two-man race with one week remaining. Arizona forward Azuolas Tubelis was the conference’s top performer in December and January, but UCLA forward Jaime Jaquez Jr. has owned February — and led his team to the regular-season title. Our hunch is the coaches pick Jaquez because of the wins and because he’s a senior who has represented himself and the Pac-12 well for years.
Shot of the year: ASU’s Desmond CambridgeThe 60-foot heave left his hand with 1.7 seconds on the clock and swished through the net just after the buzzer, sending the Sun Devils into a state of delirium. “I did not think that shot was going in,” Cambridge said.
Teams of the season: Upside surprisesOnly two teams are currently three spots above their placement in the Pac-12 preseason media poll: Arizona State, picked seventh, is fourth; and Utah, picked 10th, is sixth.
