It took 79 years to identify the remains of 2nd Lt. James Litherland III of South Williamsport.

WILLIAMSPORT-”Welcome home dear brother, you are not forgotten.”

The plane went down Feb. 28, 1944, the same day his daughter Suzanne Walker was born. She lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, with her husband Andrew.and Walker had the opportunity to have him laid to rest in France but “I wanted him to be with his family,” she said.That occurred after a brief service that included a 21-gun salute by a military honor guard and the playing of taps by Jacob Reynolds of Hughesville, a former member of the Penn State Blue Band.

In 1945 American investigators reviewed German documents detailing American planes and their crew during the war. In September 2017, a DPAA investigation team traveled to Le Translay to locate the B17F’s crash site.
