Over 4,500 Scots died waiting for a lifeline benefit to help with winter fuel costs
. Social Security Scotland is now looking to see if the £50 Winter Heating Payment can be given to the next of kin.
The devolved WHP is payable to hundreds of thousands of people on low income benefits with extra heating needs during the winter. The £50 is an automatic yearly sum and replaces the DWP’s Cold Weather Payment, which was dependent on cold temperatures. Scottish politics Lib Dem Finance spokesperson John Ferry said: "This is horrible news. The thought that people's final days may have been cold and miserable should send shivers through any right-thinking person. The Scottish Government had several months to get these payments out the door to those who needed them.
