Over 3 million people could lose food stamps under new Trump rules by lisettevoytko
to food stamps if they already receive federal or state assistance, which the department said will prevent fewer needy people from applying for the program—critics countered that it would “take food away from families.”
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, is the official title of the program. Forty-three states allow automatic enrollment into SNAP if applicants already receive federal or state assistance. The USDA argues that the new proposal, which would end automatic enrollment, will prevent abuse of SNAP. The department gave the example of Rob Undersander, a wealthy Minnesota resident who was able to use SNAP for 19 months.
The new measure was proposed Tuesday and is projected to save $2.5 billion annually. According to Brandon Lipps, the acting deputy undersecretary for USDA, “This proposal will save money and preserve the integrity of the program. SNAP should be a temporary safety net.” , 40 million people, or 12% of the U.S. population, receive SNAP benefits. To qualify, a family’s yearly income must be below 130% of the federal poverty line; for a family of four, that would be $32,640.The new proposal won’t go into effect until the conclusion of a 60-day public comment period, beginning Wednesday.
