We chat with Outlander stars izzy_meikle & joeyphillips_ about bringing Rachel and Denzell Hunter to life in season 7, dealing with one's Quaker upbringing in the face of the American Revolution, and how to handle one's first love triangle:
Outlander season 7, part 1 makes its way to STARZ on June 16, promising a satisfying resolution to the epic cliffhanger from season 6. The series is based on the beloved novels by Diana Gabaldon, with season 7 covering the last few chapters of A Breath of Snow and Ashes before adapting the events of An Echo in the Bone. Catriona Balfe and Sam Heughan star as Claire and Jamie Fraser, with a sprawling cast that fleshes out the world of the series in more than one time period.
Joey Phillips: I am indeed. That's exactly how I'd describe him. Yeah, it's quite overwhelming, I think, to join such a huge show. I think there's not only the pressure of joining such a huge show and wondering if you're going to fit into that family unit, but also bringing these characters to life. The fans of the books have been with these characters for a long time now, and they're so loved. There's an extra level of pressure on top to do that justice.
Once I got the role, I obviously bought the books and read them. It's great to have as much context as possible when you're building a character. Obviously, there's so much amazing source material that it'd be a waste not to use it. We see him asking Claire if it's all worth it. You know, "There's just so much death and so much violence. How can we be making a difference? How can we be helping people?" I think that's really amazing, because I think his overall goal in life is to just help people and do as much good as he can in the world, and it's hard to hold onto that at times when you're surrounded by so much by violence and war.
