As an endocrinologist, two primary tools I prescribe to people with type 1 diabetes are the insulin pump, which delivers insulin continuously subcutaneously, and the continuous glucose monitor, which captures minute-by-minute glucose values without painful fingerpricks.

Historically, these two devices did not communicate, and so the person with diabetes would have to interpret glucose data and then manually decide what insulin dose to have the pump deliver. Now, automated insulin delivery systems use an algorithm to adjust insulin doses automatically based on the continuous glucose data. The clinic where I work at the University of California San Francisco now supports hundreds of patients using automated insulin delivery systems.
