Mental Health and Student Activism: A Roundtable DiscussionImperfect Paradise: The Forgotten Revolutionary from LAist Studios investigates the mysterious death of 90s Chicano movement’s most prominent emerging leaders, Oscar Gomez. Oscar was born and raised in Baldwin Park, CA. He was the first of his family to attend college at UC Davis where he hosted a radio show, La Onda Xicana and began using his platform to educate and inform during this highly zeonophobic time in politics. But as host Adolfo Guzman-Lopez (he/him) learns more about the life of Oscar Gomez, he finds that the story is much deeper than what appears on the surface. For Oscar, his activism began to chip away at his academics, his relationships, his health. What is the toll of student activism? How do we preserve our mental health? In this live event at The Cheech, the newly-opened center for Chicano art, culture, and industry, Guzman-Lopez and a panel of experts will uncover the ways in which mental health issues impact student activists today, and its role in the history of student activism movements. Arrive early to stroll through the galleries while Darren J. de Leon, a.k.a. DJ Aztec Parrot spins an all-vinyl set inspired by Oscar Gomez’s college radio show. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. Read more about the making of the podcast and Guzman-Lopez’s journey of discovery.SPECIAL GUESTS Dr. Elizabeth Mondragon, Director, Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) University of California, Riverside Judith Segura-Mora, UC Davis MEChA President, 1992; Vice President of Human Resources, Hispanic Grocers, Inc. & Vice President, Mind Growers, Inc.
