Oscar Isaac has called his upcoming Disney+ series MoonKnight the 'first legitimate Marvel character-study since Iron Man.'👀
Moon Knight will be the first real character study in the MCU since Iron Man, Oscar Isaac says. It's been almost 14 years since Marvel Studios' superhero franchise was kicked off via the Jon Favreau-directed flick starring Robert Downey Jr. The universe has significantly evolved since then, but Isaac says that it's revisiting its roots through his upcoming Disney+ show, Moon Knight.
After starring in the critically panned X-Men: Apocalypse as its titular villain, the actor is returning to the Marvel world, this time, in the MCU, however. Isaac has a second chance at successfully entering the comic book movie sandbox by playing Marc Spector in Moon Knight. As in the comics, the character is suffering from dissociative identity disorder, hence why he's living as the mild-mannered gift shop employee in London named Steven Grant.
“The idea of getting back to ‘handmade’ films, character studies… I was desperate for that feeling. It felt ‘handmade. And it’s the first legitimate Marvel character-study since Iron Man. I thought, ‘Maybe I can hijack this thing. Maybe this is the chance to do something really fucking nutty on a major stage.’”
MCU is known for its spectacle films and crossover specials, but at its core is its characters. Marvel Studios has made sure that every project has put a significant focus on its heroes, at times, even at the expense of its villains. Nonetheless, it worked wonders for the franchise since it made it easier for fans to be hooked on their stories. Even with obscure characters such as Rocket Raccoon or Groot, people are somehow emotionally invested in them.
It's mandatory that Marvel Studios prioritizes establishing Isaac's Spector in Moon Knight. The character in itself is already complicated considering that he has multiple personas, but it also needs to be careful about how it depicts mental illness. If the MCU fails to properly execute the character's origin story, it could be difficult to effectively utilize him moving forward.
