The Orange Board of Education has approved a resolution to make provisional changes to board policies and administrative guidelines to comply with House Bill 33, but the vote was not unanimous.
House Bill 33 establishes the state operating budget for the Ohio General Assembly for fiscal years 2024 and 2025.
It also creates the position of director of education and workforce, who will be appointed by the governor with the advice and consent of the Ohio Senate, and establishes a Department of Children and Youth. Boyle said she believes the General Assembly is “dismantling” the ODE and the State Board of Education via HB 33 and “really hamstringing them.”
Boyle said the district is fortunate that the Orange school board recently adopted new textbooks for history, “because I’m pretty certain the next time we come around and have textbooks in history, we’re going to be like Florida, which now has to teach that Black people actually benefited from slavery because it taught them useful skills.”
“I’m scared for what’s happening in the state of Ohio because it seems that they just do whatever they want when they want it, and no one says anything. So this is me saying something.”“I don’t know that we can do anything about it,” he said. “They’re taking everything away from the voters and giving it to the party in charge and politicizing public education, and the one thing public education should never be is politicized.
Board Vice President Angela Arnold asked Campbell, “Is there any direct benefit to our district at all in this resolution, with these changes?”Boyle said she understands that the district needs to have its policies up to date, but added she still doesn’t agree with it.
