Oppenheimer's sex scenes are prompting divisive responses and boycott calls from Hindu audiences due to the appearance of the Bhagavad Gita.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Oppenheimer's sex scenes have received mixed responses from viewers, but especially sparked outrage from Hindus due to the appearance of the Bhagavad Gita in one scene. The sex scenes caused a stir even before Oppenheimer premiered when it landed the first R-rating of a Christopher Nolan film in 20 years for nudity and sexuality.
Oppenheimer viewers have taken to Twitter to express their outrage at the film's sex scene featuring the Bhagavad Gita. User @HarrisSultan slammed Oppenheimer as disrespectful for having a holy book used in a sex scene. Some viewers were also shocked that when Oppenheimer was released in India, the sex scene was blurred, but the Bhagavad Gita reference remained despite being potentially seen as "blasphemy." Some defended the decision, though, since the characters don't regard the book as "holy", and only as "Sanskrit.
Meanwhile, a quote from Gita actually plays a big role in Oppenheimer, as when the eponymous physicist witnesses the terrible power of the atomic bomb he was instrumental in creating, he states, "Now I am become Death, destroyer of worlds." This was also historically accurate, as the real-life Oppenheimer later claimed that it was this Gita quote that came to his mind when he first witnessed the detonation of the atomic bomb.
While the one quote following the bomb's creation may have been accurate, the historical accuracy of Oppenheimer's sex scene featuring Tatlock instructing Murphy's titular character to recite the Bhagavad Gita during the act remains unclear.
