The best responses will be published that night. I thought I’d left my childhood friends and family behind. I was the only one in my graduating class to go from Arizona to Michigan. I liked that.
This familiarity feels like an unexpected blessing, even if it’s the result of an unexpected curse. It’s a return to the people who selflessly prepared me for independence. It’s my chance to sit down with childhood friends and savor our commonality: We all call Tucson home, and we all help make it feel like home for each other.
I arrived in London two months ago for my semester abroad, excited to visit the theater, study money and banking, and traverse Europe. Five weeks in, my grand plans unraveled. My study-abroad experience would take place on a computer screen back home. On the second day of online classes, I watched a recorded lecture on George Herbert’s poetry from my kitchen table. It wasn’t the same as discussing great writings while sitting next to other students passionate about literature. I asked myself how I was going to keep learning.
