Opinion: San Diego should be proud of hosting The Transplant Games [Opinion]
Fifty-five years ago, my brother and I were commissioned officers in the Public Health Service. Working at NIH as a medical-legal team, our first assignment was to examine organ donor laws. Working closely with the Uniform Law Commission, we had a model donor law ready when Christian Barnard performed the world’s first heart transplant and organ donation became front page news.
The Uniform Anatomical Gift Act was completed in June of 1968 and adopted by all 50 states in three years. Today, we have a countrywide uniform legal system for organ donation. Please register as a donor and make a gift of life!
