Opinion: My classroom’s latest equipment for school lockdowns — a poop bucket (via latimesopinion)
As my students return to class this week, the newest equipment needed for school lockdowns will be there to greet them. It was delivered to my 11th-grade Advanced Placement Language and Composition class in the fall during a lesson on how to construct a thesis. My juniors cheered its arrival and everyone jokingly asked for the right to try the “safety device” first.
There are few indicators of public surrender that can be applied to an entire country, but it seems clear that the placing of primitive portable toilets in classrooms speaks volumes regarding the mindset of U.S. officials on the issue of gun violence in schools. The classy buckets have a working lid, a surprisingly comfortable seat and are filled with all the correct plastics to ensure a sterile environment while used in a classroom — while hiding from armed assailants trying to murder children and the adults who teach and care for them.
In the face of a rising number of school shootings over the past decade, the country is still without a means to stop these events. Many schools have increased campus security and trained teachers, supervisors and students the survival tactic of “run, hide, fight.” “Run” away from shots and off campus if it is clear. “Hide” in a place with locking doors and maintain silence. “Fight” when all other options fail because the alternative is death.
