Never before had I felt the need to be joined by others, not for me but for us, the reporters. On Jan. 17, 2022, a man shot and killed photojournalist Margarito Martínez, and not even a week later, another journalism colleague, Lourdes Maldonado, was also killed.Get to know the people reporting on some of the biggest stories in local journalism.
After a colleague’s idea, we decided to hold a vigil to remember Martínez. One night before the event, I kept thinking of how many times we’ve been the hug that comforts so many others and that, in that moment of deep sadness, I wanted to feel that we were not the only ones who cared about our dead colleagues, but that out there, where we have always been, there was someone else who cared about us.
It was when I arrived at that vigil, after bursting into tears and breaking down inside, that I saw a wall of men and women. Some carried flowers, others just white shirts. I recognized many of those who were there. They were not only my comrades in a thousand battles, but they were also all those people who Martínez, Maldonado and many of the local reporters have been with.
