Opinion: Cesar Chavez inspired me to pursue higher education and become an agent for change [Opinion]
Did she miss the part in my paper where Cesar Chavez had served this country’s military, and lived and worked to empower people in the U.S.?
As I began to follow my educational path, I went to SDSU via the Educational Opportunity Program and the leadership of Gus Chavez. I became chairwoman of MEChA in 1990, and as chair, I collaborated with Risa Sneider Baron, the president of the SDSU Democratic Club. We went to the Associated Students to ask for funding to bring Cesar Chavez to SDSU. To my surprise, the leadership of Associated Students met with us, eating grapes at the front of the table.
until we were able to get enough votes to pass the funding request. That life-changing event reminded me of the importance of leadership, then I ran for vice president of Associated Students and won, in 1991.Along with Dwayne Crenshaw and Patrique Lindahl, we inspired a diverse generation in the Associated Students at SDSU. The 10 years from 1991 to 2001 had a lasting legacy of leaders throughout California.
In my memories, I reflect on the union I had with Andrea Fuentez, who led the San Diego County Cesar E. Chavez Commemorative Committee for many years. Cesar Chavez inspired her as well. She came from Fresno to get an education at the University of San Diego, and it was there that we formed a union and built a bridge to start the Cesar E. Chavez Community Breakfast. She led for many years until heaven took her wings up to rest.
