Opinion: Are the House Jan. 6 hearings political theater or a vital investigation of insurrection? [Opinion]

” : The difference between our two worst presidents? Richard Nixon knew when to stop the stupidity, consider the country, do the right thing, quit and stay gone. Donald Trump apparently just has no clue. Doesn’t get it, dishonorable to the core, which is why he is so dangerous. The liberal Jan. 6 committee is great at diverting our attention from real, current problems — inflation, homelessness, immigration, crime — to accusations, hints, reportedly findings; seems politically motivated.

Trump also undermined our nation’s goals to promote and support democracy when he played politics and temporarily withheld U.S. funding earmarked for Ukrainian defense against Russian aggression, again putting himself first. We must show the world we won’t stand for tyranny, no one is above the law, and we will protect democracy against the lies of any megalomaniac. Can we just move on from Jan. 6 and start solving the nation’s problems. People are suffering from inflation, gas prices etc.

The House committee has done a masterful job of revealing the damage and hopefully their investigation will result in indictments to take out the worst offenders. It reminds me of a termite-infested house. If left untreated, the remaining termites will continue to chomp away and it will collapse. To save the “house,” we need to tent the country and pump in the necessary poison. The latest poll shows that over 50% of Americans are afraid that we will lose our Democracy in the future.
