Opinion: Amnesty International's report on the Israel-Palestine conflict is a call to action [Opinion]
such as water and electricity, the United States would not only condemn it but would consider taking direct action. Until the international community and the United States begin to hold Israeli leaders responsible and enforce consequences for state-sanctioned human rights violations, emboldened Israelis will continue to eradicate the Palestinian indigenous population.
What aids Israel the most is American apathy. We pride ourselves on freedom and liberty for all when in reality we care only when it directly affects us or when there is media attention. I argue that it does impinge on our lives with the diversion of American tax dollars to sustain unspeakable and systematic destruction.
This indifference is slightly alleviated with social media and the ability to watch in real time the atrocities Palestinians experience. Livestreaming of house demolitions and the beatings and arrests of peaceful protesters have allowed the media and the international community to see firsthand the undeniable truth beyond Israeli propaganda. The Israeli government and Zionist organizations, aware of the power of grassroots activism and information sharing, stop at nothing to suppress it.
Will Palestinians and their allies continue to be censored when calling for peace and disseminating true information? When the U.S. government and public do not report on Israeli atrocities, we are doing Israel’s bidding and choosing to turn a blind eye to ceaseless and inhumane injustice. Amnesty International’s report underscores this reality and is a call to action.
