Opal Lee, the Grandmother of Juneteenth, social activist and author, decided it was time to shape history. She shares the importance of using your voice to activate change. In June 2021, her efforts paid off when President Joe Biden signed a bill making Juneteenth a federal holiday.
After retiring from education, she noticed that people still needed her assistance. It was at this moment that she became a voice within her community. Among the many roles she’s had over the years, she was one of the founding members of Citizens Concerned with Human Dignity, served on the Historic & Cultural Landmarks Commission and is a board member of Habitat’s Land Acquisition.
President Biden invited Lee to the White House for the signing of the bill. She stood right next to him and Vice President Kamala Harris, witnessing history in the making. But she hasn’t stopped there. She continues helping people in her community, and if she wins the Nobel Peace Prize, she plans to fly overseas to Uganda to help a mother with 38 children. Also, Lee teamed up with Unity Unlimited and the WCN to release an apparel and accessory line, the Freedom Collection.
