Voters across Lake County will choose officials to set policy — and vote on referendums to help make decisions themselves — on April 4. But, their votes will only count in approximately 25% of the contests.

A significant number of uncontested local elections for offices in the community are not unusual. Keith Brin, the Lake County Republican chair, said after voting in statewide and federal elections in November, there is voter fatigue.“After the general election cycles, people are generally tired of politics,” Brin said. “The animosity of the last several years has driven people to just get back to their lives and not think about politics. The level of apathy is not surprising.

While people tend to be more interested in issues at the federal level, they tend to be less concerned with things in their own backyards. Gash said that may be both keeping candidates from running, and voters from going to the polls. “A lot of the very local elections are not well-advertised, or what openings are available,” Brin said. “Most people are aware the president is every four years, and Congress every two, but when people get down ballot to the school board very few know what the elections are about.”

In the primary, voters will select Democratic nominees in the 2nd Ward between Ald. Patrick Seger and Jose A. Guzman; in the 3rd Ward between Darren E. Lewis and Juan Martinez; in the 6th Ward between Ald. Keith Turner and Brendan Stewart; and in the 8th Ward between Ald. Lynn Florian and Mike Hewitt. The winners will be unopposed in April.
