OnePlus has focused on power and performance with the OnePlus 10T. Has it delivered on that promise, and does this stripped-back smartphone still feel like a OnePlus phone?
OnePlus has also defined the role of the 10T. This is the phone focused on power. All in all, the OnePlus 10T feels, if not muscular, a little bit more physically defined than the OnePlus 10 Pro.Some smartphones look to cover every single base, to be the smartphone to end all smartphones. The OnePlus 10T 5G is not such a phone. It has made some compromises, but these are made to service the goal of the phone… to offer as much performance as possible.
The other area where performance gains can be found is in cooling. OnePlus hasn’t gone the way of some extreme gaming smartphones by including active cooling with a fan, but it has worked hard on passive methods, including a larger vapour chamber. 3D graphite, and strategic use of copper to wick away heat. This keeps the chips as cool as possible and the performance as high as can be.
This is balanced out by fast charging - an area in which OnePlus took an early lead. The OnePlus 10T comes with a 4800 mAh battery and a 150W charger in the box. That offers an empty to full charge time of nineteen minutes when all conditions are spot on. That is a lot of energy going into the battery so OnePlus has thirteen temperature sensors to monitor the charging and regulate it as required.
It is a decision that has been made with a clear head. OnePlus has said that the space freed up by removing the slider has allowed for more battery capacity and more heat dispersion, so there is a positive payout for the OnePlus 10T; remember that this phone is all about performance, so the battery and heat capacity is more important in this iteration than in other handsets.
Of note, the OnePlus 10T will be shipping with OxygenOS 13, which will make it one of the first handsets to implement Android 13. This brings with it more features around safety and security. The handset comes with three years of Android updates and four years of security updates. That’s a step up from previous years and to be welcomed, but with a 4/5 split coming from Samsung, it’s a better but not the best option on the market.
Coupled with the extra power from the new snapdragon chipset and you have a phone that can stand alongside some of the top-end gaming smartphones. It’s not going to overtake them, especially as there is no active cooling, but it does allow the OnePlus 10T to be a serious contender for high-end gaming.
