Ryan Harvey was brutally murdered by Paul Atherton in Blackpool
A one punch murderer's final gesture in court was to give his loved ones and family members the relaxed 'hang loose' hand gesture. It came moments after he was handed a life sentence for taking the life of a tourist who was enjoying a day out in Blackpool.
Atherton, of Knowsley Crescent, Thornton, admitted manslaughter but was found guilty of murder following a trial at Preston Crown Court. He was flanked by five officers as he sat on the dock to be sentenced to life, with a minimum term of 16 years. The three friends who were with Ryan when he was attacked described their trauma at what happened and how they will no longer enjoy football and fun times with him. "Life isn't the same without Ryan", one of the girls said.
"Ryan was one of a group of four young people who had come to Blackpool for a fun day out. One of the entirely needless tragedies was that Ryan and his friends were about five minutes from catching the bus back to their home in the Midlands. Ryan would never make that journey home to his family, friends and future because when a few minutes after that initial kick you ran across Central Drive and knocked him unconscious with an almighty punch.
