Fans have often had questions about how certain things work in the Pokémon world, like schools, but one manga explained exactly what it's like.
Since the franchise began, Pokémon fans have wondered just exactly how being a Pokémon Trainer works. Can anybody be a trainer? How old does one need to be? And why doesn't Ash Ketchum ever have to go to school?
All these questions and more are actually explained in one of the earliest Pokémon manga to be released, The Electric Tale of Pikachu. A loose adaptation of the anime series, The Electric Tale of Pikachu starts off quite differently, and these differences allow it the opportunity to explain certain elements of the franchise, like trainer licensing, for the first time. For starters, Ash isn't given Pikachu by Professor Oak; he finds it nibbling on the wires in his wall.

Gary brags that he's about to leave on his Pokémon adventure, rubbing in the fact that licensed Pokémon Trainers are exempted from required attendance at school.
Hilariously, the only requirement other than being 10 years old is that prospective trainers must take a half-day-long training seminar and pass an exam based around that. Pokémon Trainer licenses seem to be quite easy to acquire, as Ash decides to go get his after seeing Gary, and is seemingly able to do so within the same day. When Ash causes a spectacle in town with his poorly-trained Pikachu, the police even stop him and ask to see his license, commenting on his newness.
The legality of Pokémon training and raising isn't really touched on in either the main anime or the game series, so it's nice that the manga offers a fairly logical explanation for it all. The issue of school has long been a point of contention among the fandom as well. While the new Pokémon Horizons anime has shown its heroes learning remotely via their Rotom Phones, the anime's Ash hardly ever even acknowledged the concept of school.
