One dead in fiery Chula Vista crash [Breaking]
A driver died early Saturday after crashing into a tree in the Otay Ranch community of Chula Vista, police said.
The collision happened about 12:35 a.m. on Otay Lakes Road west of Santa Paula Drive, which is near state Route 125. Investigators determined the driver had been headed west in a Kia Forte when the car veered into the center median and hit a tree in the center median. The engine exploded, and flames quickly spread to the car’s cabin, police said.
Several nearby motorists stopped to try and free the driver and put out the flames, police said. When officers and paramedics arrived, the driver was dead.
