Pulitzer Prize winner David McCullough delves into the less familiar story of the settlement of the Northwest Territory in his new bookMore than 200 years after settlers embarked on a 700-mile journey from New England to what was known as the Northwest Territory, David McCullough says a crucial item on their packing list is also on his: books.

“They were taking their Bible, they were taking books about religion, or they were taking, just, books that meant a lot to them,” says Mr. McCullough, a Pulitzer Prize-winning author whose latest book covers this era. “Each and every one of these men wound up with tremendous pride in the library they had assembled.”
