season 3, a reality show where the BTS members travel to different countries together , fans spotted the therapy memoirby Baek Sehee on RM’s bedside table. The book is a plaintive journey through mild depression, questions of self-esteem, and what it means to love yourself. The author often fails to do so, drawing up protective armor and comparing herself to those around her obsessively.
“Happiness and unhappiness alternate throughout life, as in a dance,” Baek writes, translated by Anton Hur. “I want to enjoy the tides of feeling in me as the rhythms of life.” There’s a desire to coexist with uncertainty in RM’s work as well. In 2020, he told, “Looking back, there were a lot of ironies and contradictions in this industry. I thought I figured them out one by one, and then finally understood the whole thing. But now I feel like I don’t know anything at all.
In “Yun,” with Badu, he explores human vs. artist, beauty vs. sadness, and how you can grow both despite and because of the advice you get from others. How do you know what to reject? The song is named after thealbum cover. At the beginning of the song, Yun narrates: “According to Plato’s humanity, it’s the human essence to seek truth, goodness, and beauty. It’s the sincerity in truth, the moral goodness, and the beauty. But in my opinion, you have it all when you have the truth.
RM knows the magnitude of BTS’s fame means his words reach more than just the group’s most devoted fans. Perhaps that creates a sense of responsibility; for RM specifically, hisspeeches have become inextricably tied to his brand as a group leader and artist. Many people look to him for strength and guidance, but also vulnerability — a complicated assurance that he’s made it through something and can surely encourage you to do the same.
