Joe Biden committed at the DemDebate to not deport any immigrants during his first 100 days in office. Both candidates complicated their immigration records while discussing the issue.
This is the most substantive debate we’ve seen so far on immigration. Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders has been portrayed for much of the campaign as moving to the left—calling at one point to end all deportations–but tonight, both he and Vice President Joe Biden appeared to complicate their records.
For many years, Mr. Sanders didn’t support progressive immigration policies, arguing that bringing too many immigrants into the country could harm the wages of American workers. He has for the most part avoided this narrative, but tonight, when pressed by Mr. Biden, he called the highly regulated practice of bringing guest workers to the country a form of slavery.
“That bill was opposed by the largest Latino organization in America. They called the guest-worker program akin to slavery,” Mr. Sanders said. His vote against a comprehensive 2007 immigration bill helped sink the legislation, which would have provided a path to legalization for millions of unauthorized immigrants.
For his part, Mr. Biden committed not to deport any immigrants in the first hundred days of his presidency, after facing sustained pressure from immigration activists who blame Mr. Biden and former President Obama for deporting three million immigrants. “From that point on, the only deportations that will take place are commissions of felonies in the United States of America,” Mr. Biden said. That position—deporting only immigrants with felony criminal convictions, means he and Mr. Sanders have landed on precisely the same deportation policy as the campaign enters its next phase.
