The legendary supermodel and musician’s new record helped her find a new lease of life.

’s openness and whimsy. “I fell in love with Nashville, I fell in love with my community, and I realised what I had at my fingertips,” she says. Most of all, though, Elson describes the new music as a light produced during the most challenging days of lockdown. “was sort of like me reaching for the sun during a really dark time,” she says. “I couldn’t have any darkness on the record, as it felt like the world was too heavy for me to contribute any more to that heaviness.

Nashville is so different from other cities, and the creative community here is so close. Everyone’s not staying in the studio until four o’clock in the morning – you’re going home to tuck your kids in bed. And again, I needed that during the pandemic. So many things came to the surface for me, just in terms of how I live my life and the direction I wanted to go in.

I mean, I did it for years before I even became a model. I was in school choirs, and the overarching theme of my childhood was pretty much that I would sing all the time. I would write crappy songs with my neighbour and perform them for family members. But then in my teens, I became incredibly shy. I would write songs privately, but never with the idea that I would make a record. In my 20s, I felt like I had been defined as a model, and if I tried to pivot from that, maybe I’d be ridiculed.
