Omicron variant spreads faster than other virus strains but is less likely to cause severe infection, study finds

The Omicron variant spreads more quickly than past versions of the coronavirus, yet it's less likely to cause severe illness, a new South African study finds. Discovery Health, the largest health insurance company in South Africa, analyzed over 200,000 COVID-19 cases, including 78,000 caused by Omicron. The risk of hospitalization was 29% lower for Omicron patients than for those infected in South Africa's spring 2020 wave, the researchers found.
