The new variant continues to spread around the world but might still be susceptible to current vaccines.
In the weeks since it was discovered in South Africa in late November, the Omicron variant has triggered fresh restrictions around the world and sent scientists searching to better understand the new Covid-19 strain.
The variant has now been identified in more than 70 countries, including the U.S. As of mid-December, the Omicron variant accounted forand more than one in eight cases in the New York and New Jersey area, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC said the variant has been identified in at least 30 states and Washington, D.C.
