The 19-year-old star took to the Other Stage at Glastonbury on Saturday: with a guest in the shape of Lily Allen, an Avril Lavigne cover, and a rapt crowd, it was a set to remember
, in which she used to star. In November that year, Rodrigo also assumed the lead role in the network’s show, a mockumentary about a school drama club, and started dating her onscreen love interest Joshua Bassett. She and Bassett broke up, and Rodrigo wrote a song called “drivers license” about her heartache. Today, she just played one of Glastonbury’s biggest stages. It’s been a busy three years.
. At only 19, she is the winner of three Grammys, and is the youngest solo artist to ever have a number one single and album at the same time in the UK. Expectations for her performance – her first on these shores outside of playing at the BRITs – were huge, and pre-show, punters buzzed around the Other Stage, waiting to see what Rodrigo would bring to Worthy Farm.
What they got was an astonishing hour, which more than justified any and all hype. As the sun shone and the clouds parted, Rodrigo bounded onto stage, and began with her Sour album opener “brutal”, followed by “jealousy, jealousy”, backed by her all-woman band.
Elsewhere, Rodrigo, dressed in purple gingham and camo, performed tracks from her debut album alternately playing guitar, head-banging, and holding court on top of the monitors. Her vocals, powerful throughout, did not falter once.
