The Oklahoma legislature has given final approval to a so-called 'heartbeat bill' that seeks to ban most abortions in the state.
, but known as the"Oklahoma Heartbeat Act," the bill bans abortions after cardiac activity can be detected in an embryo or fetus. There are exceptions for when the mother's life is at risk, but not for rape or incest.
However, a civil lawsuit cannot be brought against a woman who receives an abortion. Julie Daniels, who sponsored S.B. 1503,Planned Parenthood and the Center for Reproductive Rights said they plan to ask the Oklahoma State Court to block the bill before it goes into effect and ends most abortion care in the state.
