COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State Board of Education defeated in a 10-7 vote an effort to install a permanent superintendent Tuesday afternoon, after the resignation of former education chief Steve Dackin over ethics questions..
Board rules require members to introduce a resolution in one meeting and vote on it during the following month’s meeting. Since a month hadn’t passed, Hagan asked school board Vice President Martha Manchester, who ran Tuesday’s meeting, for permission to proceed with his Hook resolution as an emergency measure.
Then member Walt Davis from suburban Cincinnati requested a full board vote on whether the resolution should be an emergency and a spirited debate ensued. Enrollment declined by 3%, or 53,000 kids, in 2020-2021 compared to the 2019-2020 year. English language arts proficiency rates decreased by 8% in the 2021-2022 school year. Math proficiency fell by 15%, according to data from the Ohio Department of Education.
“We had 27 viable candidates, from which we vetted the top three,” she said. “As Mr. Davis pointed out, Mr. Hook got a majority vote to include him in the final three. Taking more time, I do not think that will get us to a better candidate than we already have.”“I agree that we rushed it and we shouldn’t have,” he said about the decision to appoint Dackin at the May meeting.
