Researchers at Central State University in Ohio are working to develop traits in honeybees that would combat parasitic mites, one of the biggest causes of colony loss.
Using feral bees, Central State University aims to breed a"biting" trait into a larger percentage of a hive's bees to fight parasites.
To introduce new strains of bees into the hive, the researchers have collected drones from hives that have a high percentage of mite-biter bees. These drones will be used for artificial insemination of the queen – a process that requires 15 to 20 drones in nature, but increases significantly to 50 to 60 for artificial insemination.
The research at Central State University comes at a crucial time as honeybees continue to face threats to their existence. of their managed colonies in the past year. That’s up significantly from the 12-year average of 39.6% of colonies lost annually.food supplyStill, the overall bee colony population remains relatively stable due to the efforts of beekeepers in creating new colonies and restocking hives.
