An Ohio man allegedly on drugs was charged last week with going into an unfamiliar, unlocked Hammond house, then hitting the homeowner with a cell phone in his hand, so he could flee.
Robert Schaefer, 21, was charged Sept. 7 with battery resulting in serious bodily injury, a Level 5 felony; battery resulting in moderate bodily injury, a Level 6 felony; residential entry, a Level 6 felony; and misdemeanor resisting law enforcement.
He posted a $3,000 bond Monday. His next court appearance is Sept. 14 before Judge Samuel Cappas. Court records indicate his last address was in Olmstead Falls, Ohio.Hammond Police were called around 10:30 p.m. Sept. 5 to the 3900 block of 176th Place for a reported fight. There, the homeowner said a stranger barefoot and clad only in black shorts — later identified as Schaefer — opened the unlocked back door and came inside. He thought it was one of his kids and yelled to keep the dogs inside. When the homeowner realized what happened, he tried to usher Schaefer away from his family and out of the house. When Schaefer tried to go around him, the homeowner grabbed him by the throat.
Schaefer knocked him down when he hit him on the left side of his head with a cell in his hand, then ran out. It caused a “severe” cut and eye swelling, according to the affidavit. The homeowner later said Schaefer kicked his dogs and one might have bit him. He said he wanted to press charges. He told investigators he took mushrooms that night, which fed his “paranoia.”
He was dropping a friend off at a Naperville hotel, when he thought two cars were following him. He decided to hop on the highway and drive the “opposite” way from where he was staying. He had “some sort of panic attack” and ended up on an unfamiliar highway. He got out of his car and started knocking on doors, going into the third house, because he was unlocked. The homeowner grabbed him and Schaefer admitted hitting him before he fled.
